  1. Justin F. 6th hour

The hour begins with a deep discussion about Scott's peanut butter cookies. They look delicious,so it is safe to conclude Scott did not make them. Then next to me Malcolm starts a discussion about the school's one-acts. I have to say they sound rather interesting, but I digress. Mr.Becker then (officially) starts class by opening what we did last Friday. He then goes on by saying "the more you write in your comparison matrix's,the easier it will be to evaluate the story as a class". We then begin to evaluate the Babylonian myth as a class. Malcolm (without hesitation)boldly states that he found there to be many gods in this particular story. Scott adds he found the gods to be some what "elemental". Mr.Becker states that Apsu and Tiamat are the chaotic gods, but they were also thee first gods(in this version of the story). They had a sick thing in common. That just so happens to be,they both wanted to kill their children. WHAT??? We then discuss how the gods are depicted as serpents in this story. Also they make giant, hideous beasts, such as the ever so terrifying dragonfly. the animals were made only to serve as loyal, fighters for the gods. they were also the drive of chaos. We move on to talk about the human creation. Malcolm states that humans were made from evil in a sense. Taylor quickly adds that humans were made just to act as servants to the gods. We begin to discuss the birth metaphor...we seem to be having difficulties finding this metaphor. We then "get into the gutter",which makes things a little more interesting...and clearly disturbing. But we go about this in a rather mature way surprisingly. Mr.Becker warns us of the "son/husband" in the next myth. We are puzzled as to why a god would use water against a water god? Irony perhaps? We then do the only thing to do in that situation;that is to question which science would allow this madness? Sarah then shares how salt water makes her "tummy" hurt. I digress. We then compare the roles of women from our last story and this one.We found that in the Navajo story, women were very important(if not as important as the men)in their society. In the Babylonian story, women were just power hungry.Mr.Becker then asks us to read on to the Greek side of things. This is found on page 82. We read only to find that originally the Greek society was mother dominated, then transitions to a father dominated society.Just for a heads up,there is a lot of cannibalism and incest in this story!

  2. Adrianna C. 3rd hour
I walk into class already not prepared because my friend grabbed my book with my chart for the story we just read. On that note I figured it wasn't going to be a good day for me in the class.Anyways Mr.Becker proceeds to tell us to get out our charts so we can discuss each category and find out what we all had wrote.I notice as Mr.Becker is talking about the supreme being box on the chart, that he likes to constantly walk back and forth in the room. I figure he must get a nice workout. Well anyways for the most part everyone agrees that Marduk plays the role of the supreme being in Enuma Elish. The class is pretty quiet today.Im assuming because it Monday. Josh seems to have a lot of input today though. The next topic we go on to is about the role of animals in the story. We all knew that Tiamat's monsters played the role of the animals. Once this was said Mr.Becker made a funny comment of "these animals are not furry woodland animals." The tone in his voice just made it funny. While Mr.Becker moved on to talking about how man was made by Kingu's blood, I notice this yellow bottle sitting on Mr.Beckers desk. It was bothering me the whole period because I couldn't figure out what was on it. I finally noticed the animals on the front and figured it must have been from the zoo. Well we finish talking about the chart and Mr.Becker assigns us a new story to read. He gives us some class time and hands out new charts to people who need them. I better get started on mine!
