Jason B. 6th Hour
ReplyDeleteLots of housekeeping at the start of the hour.
1) collected remaining syllabus signature pages (5pts)
2) Checked out textbooks
3) Made overlong speech about responsibility of taking care of new books
4) Miles read his scribe notes. I critiqued them. Miles was brave and did not shed a single tear. Thank you for helping me make use of that "teachable moment," Miles.
5) I saw that, for the second time in (my) two days, the person responsible for doing the scribe notes had dropped the class. I may have to revise this strategy.
6) Collected the one-page responses to "Origin of Stories.
7) Made brief speech about fact that "one page response" means ONE PAGE of text (if you'd like a chance to receive full credit).
Also, I slammed the door. Hard. Too hard, I know, but I wanted to make an impression.
Finally, I spoke for a few minutes about the importance of creation myths. Even as I spoke, the chaotic vibrations of the late afternoon threatened to destroy my orderly mini-lecture.
Finally, I assigned our first creation myth and explained how important it was to do a good job of logging the details of each myth so that you'll have lots of details from which to pull when you're writing your COMPARISON/CONTRAST paper later.
Read the myth and log the details on the comparison matrix--due at the start of class tomorrow.
I like this class, really, I do. There's a lot of personality, and our small size means we can get a lot of powerful work done (if you're willing) . . . but we've got to learn how to express those bubbly personalities WHILE directing our attention to the course material, and we've got to avoid getting sidetracked so often.
You work on it. I will, too.

ReplyDeleteThe morning started off just like any other. We shuffled in, groggy from the morning and picked up the usual papers and today a book card. Also on the table today was a post it telling us to grab a book from the shelf. While we were filling these cards out Mr. Becker explained to us that two drills would be performed during our class. EARTHQUAKE!!!! Administration still hasn’t figured out the desks meant for middle schoolers will not allow our high school bodies under them. While a few students had fun trying to squeeze under the desk the rest of us sat in the aisles and wondered what the day had in store. Soon after the earthquake drill the way too loud fire alarms went off and out the door we went. When we got back to class and the bustle had died down we went to work. We turned in out stories assignment and missed out on community cards because of the drills. We soon moved to our real task of the day…learning about creation myths. While the class idly listened Mr. Becker explained the common elements and what they deal with. We then proceeded to open out books to page 615 and read the story there. Our homework while reading this story was to fill out our charts we got at the beginning of the hour. The last piece of advice we received before walking out the door was to fill the boxes for we would be using these papers later.
