ReplyDeleteI run into 2nd hour as the bell rings, my buddies Andrew and Shawn are laughing at me because it is scribe day. Awesome. Mr. Becker tells 3 of his students how he needs their essay topics ok'ed by today as the class quietly settles down after the bell rings. Next he tells us about some goal-setting nonsense and asks for ideas, like participation goals, or attendace goals for all the students in the class as a whole. No one said anything. The silence is broken by fellow classmate/ comedian Andrew Donahue who says "Well I guess we're not gonna do participation..." What a jokester. We decided on the very achievable goal of "All papers in on time, both first and final drafts." Mr. Becker then goes on to tell me to make sure that it is included in the notes. Then he lectures about writing essays, and he says it is all a review... even though I have never seen what he is talking about in my life. Students begin to fall asleep as he reads from the packet we received. He then goes on to tell us that the first draft, NOT the rough draft, is due Friday, and I think to myself... Good thing I don't work Thursday night! Then I write down the one rule he has about turning papers in. Mr. Becker says, "I need a PAPER on due day, no jump drives, cds, or floppy disks!" With 10 minutes to spare in the class period, he tells everyone to proceed with their essays. Most fall asleep or sit with nothing on their desk. "Guess we're not gonna do participation," I remembered from class earlier. All I could think about was going to Jack in the Box with my buddy home from college after school. I couldn't focus on my essay because I was writing all this down so I wouldn't forget later. So along with most students, I sat at my empty desk just thinking about JBox and scribe notes, and i got nothing done. Awesome.

today was a diffrent day to say something we started class with something new a class goal. This was fun because once Mr. Becker asked about class goals with diffrent classes we all where woundering what could this class goal be get a passing grade or have good attendents. all our choices would have been easy and attanable until Mr.Becker said it must be challenging yet reachable so what could that be? then Mr.Becker should us a guidline of choices that we had to pick from either no zeros in the class or a class average of 86% or better so we got to vote and the class dicided to pick the less than 4% of zero's in 224 students. that's not hard to reach at all i mean for that one kid that just doesnt want to do it could be the diffrence. then after we dicided we got on to the real stuff the whole SHABAM!! review of how to orginize or how to start wrighting your essay paper witch was accually helpfull to the people that where awake but then Mr.Becker countinued to talk aboout not puting in boring information that totally distracts the reader and adding in information that could help the reader like starting with a story that could relate to the topic and could intrest the reader. you could also use quotes to start off but dont use Martin Luther King Jr. i have a dream speech like mr becker said it accually doesnt relate to all topics. but then mr becker cut us lose to work on our essay that are due on friday 100 persent complete no missing body or coclusion paragraphs but then the bell rings and we all continue on our long boring day back from this wonderfull three day weekend.

ReplyDeleteScribe notes
The day started off pretty similar to every day we’ve had so far. Small side talk and greetings to Mr. Becker occur. After taking attendance Mr. Becker stands up and states to the class “We have a lot to do today”, small moans from a lot of the students occur at this moment. Without hesitation Mr. Becker starts with the amazing goal settings that we have to do for each class. Most of the class complains and asks why we have to something so silly as goal setting? Becker then started talking about what goals were execptable and not under achievable. We mainly were more concerned about what would happen if we achieved this goal, a pizza party seemed to be the main focus with that. Mr. Becker explained what would happen if didn’t achieve this goal, something about reviewing it or what not.(didn’t seem very threatening…). IT came down to voting for attendance, Papers, Zeroes, or, cell phones. The class voted and Zeroes barley won(by two votes). We then found the percentage of zeroes we had in the calss so for, which happened to be 15%... that’s not very good. So we voted once again on what we should drop that percent by, which was 5%. So by the end of the year or semester, we have to have fewer than 10% of zeroes for the class. After the Goal Setting shananagins, we started talking about our essays and how to make tthem better. Becker should us a power point about what he expected from us. After the lecturing ended we some how found out that Mr. Becker has two separate master degrees, which seemed to make more students confident in the teacher, Which I don’t understand why but its whatever. It was then claimed to be work time for the rest of the class. After Becker sat down he looked at the grades for the topic checks and said that only half the class has showed him, which I thought was ironic considering that we just set a goal on not getting any zeroes. The bell rang and we left.
