I sit in my seat, thinking I haven’t been in this class for a while (even though I was on Monday). Mr. Becker comes in and starts by taking attendance as usual. We all sit unusually quiet, mostly still sleep deprived from fall break. Becker picks up on this silence and says “well you all are a quite bunch today”, as the silence continues. He then stands up and begins the lesson by holding up a medium sized book explain what the book entails, and if we took the class for enjoyment we ought to read it. No one seems interested, which leads me to believe that everyone took the class because of the credit (as I did). He stated that now that it’s second quarter we’re are in the ‘center of mythology’ which is when I start to lose interest. He brings our attention to the Smart Board and tells us to write a word down that goes along with Campbell’s book. Writing it down, I think I will never use this word in my life, my thoughts drift further and I look outside only to see my favorite security guard checking for illegal cars. As I focus my attention to the discussion again Mr. Becker says that he will use a personal story for the assignment at hand. Kids start to pipe up; everyone loves a good personal story, especially from teachers. He begins the story and a lot seem semi-interested. Half way through the story the kids eyes starts going back down into a sleep. After the lesson is finished, he tells us to fill out the worksheet with our own personal stories, but only about 6 students obey. The volume of the class lowers as I glance at the clock only to realize that there is 30 minutes left! Then I realize that it’s an early release Wednesday and we actually only have 5 minutes left. Mr. Becker then holds up a white stack of papers and says that the newspaper wants the girls to fill out a survey about their ideal boy and people chuckle. With only two minutes left as everyone is packing up, Mr. Becker makes a comparison of Anger Management (the movie) to Campbell’s theory and I can see that. The bell then rings and everyone hurries up to make their way through the door.
