*In our discussion of the hero's quest, we've talked about the inner journey as well as the outer. As his quest draws toward its end, does your hero appear to be changing in any significant way? How? Why or why not? Use at least one quote to support your claim.
---Meanwhile, check response #3.
*Discussion #3 of 4
*HW: Read section #4 and do 4th response by Monday
*OBJECTIVE: Apply post-reading strategies: question to clarify, reflect, summarize, draw conclusions. Use details from the text to analyze character, plot, setting, POV, theme, tone, and the effect of the author's style.

ReplyDeleteWith French still running through my skull, I walk into Mythology, flop down in my desk, and catch a... thirty second nap before the class begins.
Instead of chaotically shifting our desks into the lit circles to begin our discussions, we instead begin the writing prompt on the board: "Has your hero changed since the beginning of the story?" While thinking up something to put down on my piece of paper, Mr. Becker moseyed from desk to desk to check the third response.
Mr. Becker addressed us briefly, then directed us to form our literary circle.
Our group ran through the typical order: Summarizer, Questioners (That was me. I felt like my questions were a bit dumb, but whatever) and Author Analyzers.
After our discussion, we began discussing parallels between Beowulf and Grendal. It soon became comparison between that and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, but hey, what can you expect when you're in a group with me?
The groups dismissed and Mr. Becker reminded us forgetful teens that the next response was due Monday.
It wasn't until 8:00 that night that it hit me: I had scribe notes for that day. Shoot.

Today as I walked into Mythology, everything seems to be the same as always with the same group of kids talking to each other. Some talked about the lockdown and bank robbery while others talked how awesome Call of Duty is. As I sat down I thought all we were going to do today was get in our discussion groups and discuss the last section we had read, but Mr. Becker had a surprise in store for us. He decided to add to our discussion by asking us to answer a question about our reading. Does your hero appear to be changing in any significant way? How? Why or why not? Use at least one quote to support your claim. When I first read the question I had no idea how I wanted to answer it. All my character does is go around and fight people that ever caused problems to the people of his city. The more I thought about the question though the easier it became to answer. As we all answered the question a few late students made their way into the classroom when a student became shocked at the sight of students writing. He slowly walked in through the door as if he was deciding to turn around and get out before it was too late. He finally decided to stay after being informed it was only a short answer. We were then instructed to move into our groups and discuss the third section of our story with a summary, questions, author’s technique, and the question we just answered. After our groups the usual students went and talked amongst their peers until the bell to end 2nd hour rang.
